About me

I'm currently based in Casablanca, Morocco -- recently of San Francisco -- where I write about food and life in North Africa as a reluctant expat. I contribute regularly to NPR online's Kitchen Window series, and have written for the San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times, Washington Post, Point Reyes Light, Reuters, chow.com, and Backpacker magazine, among other publications. For two years I wrote the monthly "Common Walls" column for the San Francisco Chronicle's Home and Garden section about the trials and tribulations of the apartment dweller.

I've lived in Washington, DC, where I worked for the Washington bureau of Reuters -- I was a founding member of the team that produced the first incarnations of reuters.com -- wrote features for the global wire, freelanced for local publications and hosted countless dinner parties, and San Francisco, Calif., where I baked wedding cakes, copy edited for a financial firm, developed many vegetarian recipes, and spent loads of time out of doors exploring my native state.

I write about my culinary forays on my food blog; when I'm not in the kitchen I'm usually out for a run, drinking coffee with my husband, entertaining our baby daughter, Sierra, or have my head in a book.

My first cookbook, all about naturally flourless desserts, will published in fall 2014 by Chronicle Books.

This website contains a selection of my journalism from the last few years. Please contact me me for more information about my work.
